Notification of start of work on the A14 junction 47a Haughley to junction 49 Tothill concrete roads reconstruction scheme
Work on the A14 (junction 47a Haughley to junction 49 Tothill) concrete reconstruction scheme will commence on Monday 20 February.
This work is expected to be complete by summer 2024. We’ll be completely removing the concrete road surface and its foundations, before rebuilding the road and resurfacing it with asphalt.
This will improve safety and create a smoother quieter ride, providing a new modern road with a 40 to 50-year lifespan that’ll be easier and quicker for us to repair in future.
When construction begins, National Highways will be using a contraflow system to deliver most of our work. A contraflow is when the road is shut in one direction and traffic is moved over to drive on the opposite side of the road to share the remaining carriageway.
The speed limit through the contraflow will be temporarily reduced to 50mph for the safety of our workers and motorists.
Upcoming road closures
For safety, we will need to close the A14 overnight between Bury St. Edmunds and Ipswich to install the contraflow system and average speed cameras. The closures will be in one direction at a time only, between Monday 8pm and Friday 6am. So that we can begin installing the contraflow system, we’ll be closing the A14 overnight between junctions 43 and 51 from Monday 20 February until Tuesday 28 March. The road closures will be in place from Monday to Friday between 8pm and 6am each night.
